Giveaway winners! Plus, Max has his first Saturday night date

Three of you are about to adopt some caterpillars! The winners of the Butterfly Garden (chosen via random.org) are: Sarah, mom to Violet; Kate Ahern, a special ed teacher; and Meredith Templin, mom to J.T. and Finley. Please send your e-mail addresses to LoveThatMax@gmail.com so the Butterfly Garden woman can get in touch for your addresses. Have fun, follow the instructions and please, I beg you, don't let the caterpillars drink and drive.

Saturday, Dave went out night fishing and I had a dinner date with the kids. I used to be freaked about taking the kids out by myself—to restaurants, to stores, to anywhere. I just wasn't secure about being able to handle Max. I needed Dave around.

Before I had kids, I was a pretty independent person. I traveled through Europe alone, went to movies and museums alone and was never one of those girls who always needed a boyfriend. I enjoyed my own company. Suddenly having a kid who was so very dependent on me was unnerving; it took a lot of getting used to.

Saturday night, we had a blast. We went to our favorite family restaurant. Max had his usual, meatloaf and mashed potatoes with extra butter; Sabrina had grilled cheese, fries and extra pickles. And then she had to eat my pickle, too. Do you think it's wrong to argue with your four-year-old over who gets to eat the pickle? I really wanted that pickle. Happily, our pickle stand-off didn't embarrass Max, who was too busy flirting with the waitress to notice.

Sabrina colored a lot, when she wasn't arguing with me over pickles.

The highlight of the evening was when we left and saw a tow truck in the parking lot with an SUV on its flatbed. Max's eyes almost fell out of his head; it seemed to be the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen in his entire existence. We had to stand there and watch till it drove away. The rest of the evening he kept telling me, approximately every three minutes, that he wanted to put our car on a truck.

Getting our car towed would have been a way too expensive date, so I had to say no. I am going to take him to the library to pick up books about tow trucks, though.

Then we came home, watched an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in bed and, before I could read the kids a book, they were sound asleep.

My kids are pretty great company these days. I hope they thought I was a fun date.

  3. Sounds like a fun nite! By the by...I don't blame you for wanting your pickle...Mommies need pickles too. I would have excused myself for the ladies room and snagged one in the back;)

  4. Sounds like everyone had a great time!! What a nice way to spend a Saturday night - with some ultra-cute kids. And, yes, Max is a flirt, but anyone who is that handsome is allowed to be a flirt. So funny how Sabrina inherited your love of pickles.

  5. I know what you mean. . . I like having help when we go to restaurants and stuff. Scratch that--i need help. I can't get Charlie and all of his junk into a restaurant by myself--I need a staff.

  6. My husband went out and ran a 5K this past Saturday morning, so I had a therapy-free morning alone with the girls. Instead of hanging around the house, we headed to the bakery and then to the grocery store for some milk and then home to eat the yummy food. It is getting easier to venture out alone with them now. I really enjoy hanging out with just us girls, but it is a LOT of work and appreciate it when it's family outing times.

Maybe next time we'll venture out - somewhere other than McDonalds! - to eat together when my husband isn't around. Your story is inspiring me :-)

  7. Sounds like fun! Wishful thinking on my part, but I hope someday to take Austin somewhere ALONE!! Ah, how nice would that be to be alone. You think I can ask the nurse to wait in the car while we eat dinner? Oh wait, he doesn't eat. Maybe we can do something else...a museum maybe. A two hour wait isn't so bad, right?

  9. I find it quite difficult to take both of my boys anywhere, so I commend you! and i am glad that you had a good time. I hope one day that I am able to take them somewhere together without the help of my husband or parents. My big T-man is a crazy boy and needs a one on one person on him at all times (he is non-verbal and is just now learning and following commands on a regular basis). My little JD listens really well, but it is just very hard to take them anywhere together when I am by myself. I have lots of hope though!
    Thanks! Kristen P.

  11. Sounds like a great night out! We just got back from almost a week camping out at the lake, and I've had my nature fix for the season! My folks have a pop-up, but we got to enjoy sleeping in the four man tent! After the first three days, it's not so bad (tee hee)! It sure was hard to get back in the swing of things to go to work!
